Bangor Youth Hockey members relish visit with Stanley Cup

BANGOR — The Stanley Cup touched down in Bangor Friday night and members of the Bangor Youth Hockey club received the opportunity to see the Cup, which is now in the possession of the NHL champion Boston Bruins.
Cheryl Derrah, president of Bangor Youth Hockey, received a call from Bruins’ promoters that the Stanley Cup was scheduled for an unofficial stop in Bangor on its way to Canada. Each member of the Bruins’ team gets to spend a day with the Cup in their hometown or the location of their choice.
Goalie Tim Thomas had the Cup in Michigan on Wednesday and it was being flown to Canada for an event on Saturday.
The trophy was en route to St. Stephen, New Brunswick, the hometown of Bruins assistant general manager and former Bruins defenseman Don Sweeney.
Derrrah said the call she received from Wendy Watkins of Delaware North, the Bruins’ promoters, was an unexpected surprise and one that needed to be kept confidential.
Derrah notified the members of Bangor Youth Hockey on Friday afternoon via e-mail with a surprise invitation to meet her at the airport on Friday night, with no explanation of what the surprise was going to be.
Approximately 150 youth hockey members and their families gathered at the parking lot of a private terminal and waited eagerly, according to Derrah.
When the keeper of the Cup walked into the parking lot, the crowd went crazy, she added.
Derrah was also able to coordinate with local photographer Monty Rand to be in attendance to take pictures.
Families were able to take photos with the Cup for approximately 30 minutes before its trip to New Brunswick. The players received souvenir pucks and the coaches received hats.
“This was a once in a lifetime opportunity for our families,” Derrah said.
